frequently asked questions

consultation

How far in advance should the consultation be?
Consultations are typically done 2-6 weeks before the wedding date.

What is a consultation and what happens during it?
A consultation is your time to work with your artist on the look you want to have on your wedding day. Bring photos of looks you like and don’t like along with any jewelry you will wear or hairpieces. You will practice a few options for hair and/or makeup until you get the feel you love. Depending on the services you are requesting it can last from 60-120 minutes.

Do you provide recommendations for what would look good or would I be responsible for coming with a plan of what I wanted done?
We always recommend you bring a few photos of looks you like and don’t like. This is a great starting point for you and your artist. However, if you don’t have anything, your artist can ask a series of questions that will help you both narrow down the best look and feel.

Where is the consultation done?
Consultation location varies between each emily j. artist. It is typically done at the salon or spa the artist works at or at your home. Once you have secured your wedding date with us we will wrap up those details.

products + services

What types of products do you use?
We use a variety of professional products. Hair products can range from Bumble and bumble, Kenra, Davines and Sebastian. Makeup products can range from MAC, Laura Mercier, Smashbox, Bobbi Brown, Urban Decay, Armani and TheBalm.

Are you able to do provide false eyelashes?
We can provide false eyelashes for a $15 fee.

Are you able to use hair extensions?
We can definitely use hair extensions. We just recommend you have them with you at the time of your consultation.

Can I use my own makeup?
You can certainly use your own makeup if this is what you are most comfortable with. We want you to feel your best on your wedding day and will do what it takes to get you there.

travel

Do you charge a higher fee to come to my house or ceremony location?
The travel fee is determined by mileage to your desired location and any parking/valet fees at the location.

How is the travel fee figured?
The travel fee is determined by mileage from Northeast Minneapolis. It is $.50 per mile each way from this area and if there are any parking/valet fees involved that is added to the mileage fee. This fee is the same for each artist hired.

Will you travel beyond the Minneapolis/St.Paul metro area?
We would be happy to travel outside the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. If this is something you are considering, please contact emily j. at info@emilyj.com to discuss the details.

day of the wedding

Do you bring other artists with you to do attendants makeup/hair if they so choose?
The best number of artists will be available to you depending on the timing of the wedding and the number of others in need of beauty services.

How will I keep my makeup looking fresh all day if you are not there?
The products we use are top of the line. We use primers and setters to ensure your makeup stays put. We also recommend you have an anti-shine powder, such as TheBalm Sexy Mama, on hand to dust on before your photos and ceremony. You should also have your own lipstick to reapply throughout the day. These are something we can purchase for you and add to your invoice or we can let you know where you can purchase them on your own. We can talk about all of these details during the consultation.

Should I have my hair washed and dried before you arrive the day of the wedding?
This is a personal preference. If you typically wash your hair everyday and do not feel as fresh without doing so, by all means wash and dry it that morning. We have products we can use to get a little more oomph from your hair if it’s freshly washed. It’s always easier to work with second day hair, so if you’re comfortable doing that then let’s go for it. This can be determined at your consultation too.

What is the typical timing for each service provided?
Makeup for each person typically takes 30-45 minutes. Hairstyles typically take 45-60 minutes for attendants and the bride can take anywhere from 60-120 minutes. This is determined at the consultation.
